Hi Kids!

When you leave school, would you like to work in the veterinary industry? Do you want to become a Veterinarian?

Being a Veterinarian is a very rewarding job, but the journey towards this career can be very demanding. A veterinary science degree takes 5+ years of study at university.

While attending university you will learn about animals and how to diagnose, treat and care for them. You will also have the opportunity to work in different types of veterinary clinics such as small animal (cats and dogs) large animal (horses and livestock) or a mixture of both. This will allow you to make a decision about what type of animals you would like to work with when you graduate.

If you are interested in becoming a vet, contacting your school careers counselor is a great place to start. This will give you a good idea of what subjects you need to study at school and the grades you will need, to be accepted into the degree. All universities run open days and you should contact your desired university to find out more.

We asked one of our vets what they like most about being a Vet.
I like being able to help people’s pets when they are sick, so they can be healthy and happy with their families.

Do you want to become a Vet Nurse?

A veterinary nurse helps to treat animals under veterinarian guidance and assists veterinarians to perform procedures and operations. Veterinary nurses also perform many other day to day jobs such as managing anaesthetics, helping with triage and providing support and guidance to pet owners with the care and training of their pets.

Completion of the Certificate I-IV in Vet Nursing is essential in providing the skills and knowledge needed to become a veterinary nurse. Because this is a very popular job most aspiring veterinary nurses start out volunteering at their local Veterinary Clinic, which can introduce them to the experience needed to complete the veterinary nurse certificate.

The Vet Nurse Council of Australia (VNCA) offers support and guidance for anyone wanting to start or complete their certificate. If you are interested in becoming a vet nurse, contacting the VNCA is a great place to start.

We asked one of nurses what she likes most about being a Vet Nurse?
The most enjoyable thing I like is every day is different. No two days are alike and you never know what to expect. Being involved in the Puppy Preschool Program is very rewarding and I always have a great time helping to teach owners and train (and cuddle) puppies!

We truly care for pets!
