Come/Recalls Games

Training your dog or puppy does not have to be boring! Training can be very fun! Here are a few training games to help bring back the fun to dog training.

The Food Game

Meet Taco and Naomi, they are here to help us show you how to play the Food Game! Taco is a 5 year old Staffy x and he is still learning new fun and exciting training games!

Step 1:   Have some yummy snacks your dog will enjoy. For beginners it is important to practice in a quiet distraction free area. Here at Mermaid Vet we suggest a hallway.  Give your dog a treat to make sure they are interested in the training games.

Step 2: Throw a treat down the hallway. If your dog is a beginner or very young start with short distances, then slowly increase the amount of distance you are asking your dog to find the treat.

Step 3:  Once your dog has eaten the treat you have thrown ask your dog to ‘Come’ and show your dog that you have another treat. It is important to keep your voice fun and exciting when you ask your dog to return to you. This is because they might get bored or distracted and wonder off.

Step 4: Once your dog has returned to you encourage them into a sitting position and reward them with another treat. Don’t forget to tell them how well they did and that they are such a good dog! This is a nice way of teaching your dog that they are to sit when they come back to you.

Hide and Seek

Meet Rogue and Ashleigh, they are here to help us show you how to play hide and seek with your pooch. This is a very fun and exciting game and teaches your dog to come back when asked.

Step 1:   Have some yummy treats your dog will enjoy. For beginners it is important to practice in a quiet distraction free area and to start with easy hiding spots.  Give your dog a treat to make sure they are interested in the training games.

Step 2: Place a few treats on the ground to distract your dog. Once he or she starts eating the treats, find a hiding spot.

Step 3: Once you feel your dog has finished the treats call his or her name and ask them to ‘Come’ in a happy and excited voice.

Step 4: Once your dog finds you, reward them with another treat. Don’t forget to tell them how well they did and that they are such a good dog! This is a nice way of teaching your dog to come back to you.

Step 5: Drop a few more treats on the group to distract your dog again and find a new hiding spot. Repeat the previous steps and don’t forget to have fun!

Round Robin

Meet Taco and a few of the staff here at Mermaid Vet, they are here to help us show you how to play Round Robin with your furry friend!

Step 1: This is a great game for the whole family! First grab a handful of yummy treats and then sit down in a circle. Offer your dog a treat to make sure they are interesting in playing Round Robin

Step 2: Take turns calling your dog’s name. Each time he or she comes, encourage your dog to sit and reward him with a treat. Don’t forget to tell them how well they did and that they are such a good dog!  For beginner dogs or puppies make sure to start your circle small and play in a quiet non-distracting area. When your pooch has become an expert at the game, take him or her outside where you can make the circle bigger or add some friends or neighbours into the group.
